Billy Strings Postpones Shows Following Backstage Fall

Billy Strings has postponed several upcoming tour dates after breaking his leg in a backstage accident during a show in Charlottesville.

The injury occurred on Saturday, April 18, at John Paul Jones Arena, just before the musician was set to return for an encore. In a statement shared on April 20, Strings explained that the incident happened moments after he left the stage.

“Well, can’t say y’all didn’t warn me about screwing around on my skateboard!! Saturday night I walked off stage right before the encore I was all zazzed up from a really fun show,” he wrote. “I grabbed my board and tried to do a trick I’ve done a million times (back 180) and landed awkwardly and broke my leg. I heard it snap over the screaming crowd!! Sounded like a damn 2×4.”

Strings said he initially planned to continue performing despite the injury. “I had every intention of carrying on with the tour and Dave Grohling it,” he said, referencing Dave Grohl. “He even texted me and offered me the throne!”

After consulting with doctors and his team, however, the artist decided to pause his tour. “I really don’t want to let anybody down, but after some long talks with these doctors, my friends, band and colleagues, my wife etc.. I should probably let this thing heal,” he wrote.

Strings added that performing immediately after surgery would not be feasible. “I don’t believe that I could give you guys the show you deserve coming right out of this surgery and these first few days are really important as far as keeping this thing elevated and letting it heal,” he said. “Plus I’m all messed up on pain killers and stuff.”

The musician also took responsibility for the accident. “It’s a dumb ass mistake and it’s all my fault .. I feel like such an idiot,” he wrote. “But what are ya gonna do , ya know? At least I didn’t hit my head or break my wrist or something.”

As a result of the injury, Strings has rescheduled several performances. His April 22 show in Charleston has been moved to August 4. Three shows originally scheduled for April 24, 25 and 26 in Fishers will now take place on August 6, 7 and 8.

“Your tickets will still be good for the new dates,” Strings wrote. “Again, I’m really sorry and I promise I will make it up to you. See you this summer.”
