Michael James Scott will conclude his run as the Genie in “Aladdin” on May 3 at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre. A replacement for the role has not yet been announced.
Scott is the longest-running actor to play the Genie in the production and has appeared in nearly 4,000 performances across multiple companies worldwide. He first joined the musical during its 2013 pre-Broadway engagement in Toronto as a standby before opening with the Broadway cast in March 2014.
Scott later originated the role in Australia in 2016, earning a Helpmann Award, and went on to lead productions in the West End and on the North American tour. He returned to Broadway in 2019 and has played the Genie there continuously since.
In a statement, Scott reflected on his time with the show, sharing, “Playing The Genie on Broadway has been the creative journey of a lifetime—one that pushed me, shaped me, and reminded me every night why I fell in love with the stage,” he said.
“I’m deeply aware that opportunities like this haven’t always been accessible to actors who look like me, and it’s not lost on me how rare it is for an actor of color to lead a Broadway show for this long.”
Scott continued, “This experience has changed me forever, and I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me. I’m endlessly grateful to my Disney on Broadway family for trusting me, uplifting me and making this Genie journey unforgettable.”

The Genie role was originally created by Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart, who received a Tony Award for his performance when the show opened in 2014.
The current Broadway cast includes Rodney Ingram in the title role, Scott as Genie, Sonya Balsara as Jasmine, and Dennis Stowe as Jafar. The cast also features Jacob Ben-Shmuel, Colt Prattes, JC Montgomery, Don Darryl Rivera, and Ryan Gregory Thurman, with additional standby performers covering principal roles.
The production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The book is by Chad Beguelin.
